Open Water/Competitive Masters

Performance swimmers are assessed during the Taster Session, with entry based on current ability & fitness. If you’re not yet at the level required for this programme, we’ll guide you toward our Competitive Masters programme.
This program is suited to to former National Level+ swimmers and swimmers who can demonstrate a high level of athleticism. A consistently high level of attendance, alongside a strong commitment to dryland training, is essential to meet the demands of the programme.
Masters Competitive is for swimmers who want to compete and develop as competitive athletes. Entry is assessed during the Taster Session and is based on potential as well as current ability.
Former competitive swimmers are fully supported in rebuilding their technique and fitness while swimmers who are newer to competition can develop the skills and fitness needed to progress.
Training is structured around each swimmer’s needs. Higher-level competitive swimmers train in the later Friday session and Saturdays alongside our Performance swimmers, as well as Club Night on Wednesdays. Swimmers who need to develop their aerobic endurance may also be invited to Sunday training at London Fields Lido, while those who need to strengthen their racing skills will initially train in Competitive Development, with a clear pathway into the Saturday and later Friday sessions as they progress. We will help you bridge at your pace.
Progression into the Performance squad is fully supported for swimmers who demonstrate the required commitment, potential and fitness.
Swimmers must be able to swim 400m FC- no turns necessary. Ideally holding 2:15 or less per 100m. If you are slightly off the pace not to worry – at the free Taster Session you will be assessed to see whether after given a bit more practice and guidance that you will be able to hold the pace required.
NB During the racing season (Mar-Oct) swimmers will only be able to join if they can swim 400m FC in less than 8 mins.
Our Open Water swimmers train at Club Night on Wednesdays and at London Fields Lido (outdoors 50m) on Sundays, with sessions focused on developing the endurance, skills and race preparation needed for open water swimming. Swimmers are also invited to join Competitive Development on Fridays, providing an opportunity to develop their pool skills, fitness and racing ability alongside other competitive swimmers.
A club built around the goals of each individual swimmer — where every session is focused and goal-driven, giving swimmers a clear path to progress within a structured program. Our approach helps athletes develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to race successfully in both the pool and open water…
… And for those new to club life as a Masters swimmer, we offer a once-a-week Skills Development session to help ease the transition from swimming lessons to more focused training. These sessions are designed to build confidence, improve technique, and help you get comfortable training with purpose.

When pools reopened after lockdown, many swimmers returned to the water with little direction. Masters were often thrown back into large, generic aerobic sessions — with little focus on technique, skill development or training with intent.
Their potential wasn’t being unlocked. The one-size-fits-all approach left those eager to race or try open water events without the tools, confidence, or support they needed. There was no clear path for learning racing skills, improving efficiency, or even understanding how to take part in their first swim meet or open water challenge.
Breathe Believe Become
As we grow in the water, we grow beyond it becoming the swimmers we’re meant to be, and the people we aspire to become.
